The PADA-ICofA personality assessment
is a research-based evaluation of an animal’s personality conducted by qualified animal behaviorists (ethologists). It provides systematic insight into individual personality traits, responses, and behaviors in situations the animal may encounter in work, everyday life, or interactions with humans. This assessment offers a professional basis for understanding the animal’s strengths, needs, and adaptability, with animal welfare as a central focus, and is used as part of the evaluation process for animal-assisted roles such as therapy dogs, school dogs, and similar settings.
The PADA-ICofA Advisory Board
The PADA-ICofA Advisory Board consists of leading experts in animal behavior, ethology, anthrozoology, and animal-assisted services. The board provides scientific and ethical guidance for the ongoing development, refinement, and validation of the PADA-ICofA assessment framework. Its members bring diverse perspectives from research, clinical practice, welfare science, and professional standards, ensuring that the methodology remains rigorous, welfare-centered, and relevant across international contexts.Through their collective expertise, the Advisory Board supports ICofA’s mission to advance positive animal welfare and promote the well-being of animals working in human-facing roles.

James A. Serpell, PhD
James A. Serpell is a widely respected researcher in anthrozoology and canine behavior. He is well known for developing the Canine Behavioral Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ), a widely used tool for evaluating behavior and temperament in companion dogs. His research spans canine welfare, human–animal relationships, and the behavioral characteristics of dogs living in human environments. Serpell’s work has contributed significantly to the scientific understanding of canine behavior and its practical implications for selection, welfare, and training. With extensive experience in behavioral science and assessment, he provides important expertise to the ongoing development and refinement of the PADA-ICofA framework.

Kenth Svartberg, PhD
Kenth Svartberg is an internationally respected researcher in canine behavior and personality. He is widely known for his extensive work on the Dog Mentality Assessment (DMA) and for pioneering research on key behavioral dimensions such as the shyness–boldness continuum, sociability, curiosity/fearlessness, and playfulness. His contributions have significantly shaped current understanding of canine temperament and its importance in breeding, training, and working-dog selection. With deep expertise in applied ethology, behavioral testing, and personality assessment, Svartberg provides essential scientific guidance to the continued development and validation of the PADA-ICofA framework.

Anna Zamansky, PhD
Anna Zamansky is a researcher specializing in human–animal interaction, canine behavior, and the integration of technology in welfare-oriented assessment. Her work includes developing innovative digital tools for analyzing dog behavior and emotional expression, with a particular focus on welfare, ethics, and evidence-based practice. Zamansky has contributed to advancing interdisciplinary approaches that combine computer science, ethology, and interaction research. She brings valuable methodological and analytical expertise to the development and refinement of the PADA-ICofA framework.

Melissa Winkle, OTR/L, FAOTA
Melissa Winkle is an occupational therapist and internationally recognized practitioner in animal-assisted services. She is known for her applied work in clinical practice, program development, and handler education, as well as for her contributions to ethical and welfare-centered standards within the field. Her experience spans multiple settings, including mental health, rehabilitation, and community programs. Winkle’s practical insight into the needs of both animals and handlers provides an important applied perspective that supports the continued development and real-world utility of the PADA-ICofA framework.

Amy Binder, PhD

She has played a key role in advancing terminology, welfare considerations, and educational frameworks within the field, including contributing to updated international guidelines. Binder’s work emphasizes the importance of evidence-based practice and the well-being of animals participating in AAS. Her expertise strengthens the ethical foundation of the PADA-ICofA framework and supports the development of clear, welfare-focused assessment standards.

Christine Olsen, PhD
Christine Olsen is a researcher and educator specializing in animal welfare, animal-assisted services, and the development of standardized assessment tools for working animals. Together with Line Sandstedt, she is the co-founder and primary developer of the PADA-ICofA framework, integrating ethology, welfare science, and applied practice to support evidence-based selection and evaluation of animal personality. Olsen’s research includes work on canine behavior, welfare monitoring, and the impact of human–animal interactions. She has contributed to national and international guidelines in AAS and collaborates with institutions across Europe, North America, and Asia to advance welfare-centered practice. Her work provides the scientific and methodological foundation for the continued evolution of the PADA-ICofA system.
